Solo Profile: Man O War Kovnik

One of two MOW solos available, the Kovnik lives up to the background, featuring light warjack like stats, barring his speed. His normally high ARM is now even better due to his shield (the bonus is already on his stat profile), add to this his high COM and this model is somewhere in the range elite non character solos. To begin with the Kovnik has the Commander special rule, allowing friendly faction warrior models can use his COM when a command check is required, this is incredibly useful given the normally low COM of most Khadoran Casters (except both Irusks) and can ensure some of the models more likely to flee under normal conditions, like Winter Guard Infantry (without the UA) stick around for longer.

In terms of weaponry, the Kovnik is incredibly deadly. His axe has the same P+S of a heavy jack's fist and then adds weapon master on top of that. Whilst the axe lacks reach it does still provide a very good reason for your opponent not to try engaging in melee, in which case if your target happens to be out of charge distance then the Kovnik's second weapon provides an answer. The Axe has a Cannon built in to it, similar in profile to the Shocktrooper's Shield cannon, except with slightly better range, however if given the choice you should generally take the charge, given that one of the special rules this model has is the ability to use the slam power attack, meaning that this model is excellent  for opening up charge lanes.

As with other MOW models the Kovnik has Fearless as standard, meaning that nothing will make him run away, which is good considering what else he brings to the table. The MOW Kovnik is also one of Khador's Jack Marashals, (arguably the best available as well) meaning that instead of warjacks being reliant on the Caster for focus, warjacks can be marshalled, meaning that as long as the warjack is within the marshal's command area it can use the Pseudo focus that a marshal provides. Specifically the marshal allows each warjack (up to 2) to make one action that requires focus, be it charging, boosting or buying an additional attack. Additionally some Jack Marshals come with a special action, called a Drive, in the Kovnik's case it is a very good one. The drive, Boosted Attack, does exactly as it's name suggests boosts marshalled jacks attacks for free, only needing the marshal to pass a command check in order to use it. This drive works on both ranged and melee attacks making it incredibly flexible, two of the best examples for how to get the most out of this drive are the Beserker and Kodiak, as it boosts the chance to hit, meaning that chances are you will get to activate both jack's chain attacks, which is excellent on two of our most focus efficient jacks even better. another example of getting good use out of this marshal would be to marshal character jacks with large number of attacks, such as Beast 09, Drago or even Behemoth. Whilst it may be better to keep these jacks under caster control, if you prefer to play using your caster more to bolster your army rather than just your jacks, then marshaling these jacks could be a viable option, especially with this marshal leading them.

A further idea for this model if you wish to use this as a marshal is to use him with two Destroyers as each only require two focus each to work at peak performance from range, which the Kovnik can provide, the first from his drive and the second from his Psuedo focus. However if you wish to not Marshal jacks with this model, which in some cases may be worthwhile, this model performs excellently as a standalone melee monster, albeit a slow one. A final added benefit to fielding this model is that he allows you to field an additional MOW Shocktrooper or Demo Corps unit, whilst in most games this will not be a benefit you make use of. However, at higher points levels this may prove useful if you wish to field a full MOW army, although as previously mentioned in the Shocktroopers' profile such an army would be easy to outmaneuver, but highly durable.
